My friend Holly Bird has written a magnificent book about her life as a caregiver. I was very excited for her when she got published, already a best selling author, she was now sharing her private journey. I was hesitant to read her book as I knew it would hit close to home for me and would be difficult for me to get through it. Her book is titled “Shaken Dreams, A Journey from Wife to Caregiver”. As most of you know my life mirrors the book’s title “My Shaken Dreams”, because my life has also been shattered as my life has gone from wife, mother and daughter to now caregiver for all three. In addition to the caregiver aspect, the added excruciating pain of losing my youngest son shortly after her book was published, was just too much for me. I just wasn’t ready to dive into reading it or anything else. I had enough problems, but Holly Bird, the Author, graciously sent me a copy as a gift.

The book “Shaken Dreams” set on my night stand for several months. I picked the book up several times, but was always reminded of my shaken dreams and the changes in my life. But, once I finally started reading it I couldn’t stop. I will admit the book was hard for me to read, and even brought me to tears as I could feel her pain, anxiety, grief and loss of self and dreams on the pages in front of me.
Reading Brought Up Thoughts of My Shaken Dreams
Reading Shaken Dreams, I feel brought me closer to Holly and made me admire her even more. Holly was not only a best selling author, she had now published her own private journey in “Shaken Dreams.” After reading her story, I learned that Holly was also sick through this complicated journey from wife to caregiver. Something I didn’t know as she never talks about her illness. Taking care of her husband, father in law, family and herself, Holly’s book helped me find peace. As a caregiver you so often feel alone and desperate, and sometimes just knowing that other people understand your journey can make all the difference.
Shaken dreams is a definite must read for any person that is caring for a loved one. And although, reading about other peoples devastating battles can be hard and even a trigger for sadness, it also gives you hope and admiration for others caring for family members.
Finding Inspiration
Throughout the book you will find inspiration from Holly’s journey, and how she, struggling with her own debilitating disease,was able to help her husband. Holly writes about the day to do day struggles, intimacy, simple conversations that aren’t so simple with someone that is ill, family, bills, losing her home and so much more.
Holly gives some real life tips for care giving and self care. So often you see books written by authors with “great” advice, based on things they learned in school or work. Many writers have never really lived the life they write about. Shaken Dreams was refreshing, honest and a definite must read for anyone that is or will be caring for someone!
Shaken Dreams will inspire you to be grateful for the things in your life and yourself. If you are not a caregiver, you will still enjoy the story of survival through difficult times that this book conveys.
