In today’s busy world preparing meals can be difficult and exhausting. If you have a family, everyone likes different things, or are going in a million different directions. Food Prep Made Easy are just some tricks that I have used to prepare meals ahead of time to make life a little easier. Food prep also prevents us from running out to buy fast food.

I like to make food that is nutritious, protein powered and tasty to the palate.
My Ideas to Help You Food Prep
Keep it Simple – This is the best advice
Keep your meal prep simple, if you try to get all fancy with new recipes you might over whelm yourself. Some meals that store easily and are my family favorites are meatloaf, fried chicken, Asian meals, spaghetti or pasta dishes, stew, burrito’s, salmon & rice etc. It is really up to your families likes and dislikes but keep it simple. A good thing to remember is how will you or your family members re-heat the meals. I use my instant pot oven most of the time. Super quick and easy so I either avoid plastic or put the food like salmon or roast on the trays provided in the instant pot oven.
Use Good Storage containers
Storage containers can be fun and practical. The best food prep containers are easy to use, washable, microwavable or can go directly into the oven. Mason jars are perfect for salads, quinoa, parfaits, smoothies, or overnight oatmeal. I love mason jar storage, and for smoothies most people don’t realize most mason jars fit right on your blender blades so you don’t have to transfer your fruits and veggies, just add some liquid and go.
Make sure your storage containers are safe and don’t contain toxic chemicals that can leach into your food. I prefer glass, but also use some non-toxic BPA free containers.
Bulk Shop
Buying in bulk you can usually save money, just make sure that what you’re buying you are going to eat and not let go to waste. Your pantry should be well stocked so you can build your beautiful meals. Tasty spices, beans, salsa’s and dressings to help add zip and flavor to your meals.
Buy, fresh and colorful vegetables and keep them handy to add to your meals. I like to keep sliced carrots, celery, pickles and sauerkraut to add to my meals when I sit down for lunch or dinner.
Start Small
Start small, don’t try to do a months worth meals to freeze or even an entire week. If you overwhelm yourself you are more likely to fail and quit trying to food prep. And don’t try to food prep every meal of the day, maybe try doing just lunches or dinners to start. As you get better and more experienced food prepping, you will get more creative and once you start, it will be come a way of life.
Use an Instant Pot or a Slow Cooker
Slow and pressure cookers can be lifesavers for meal prep, especially if you don’t have time to stand over a stove. If I make a roast, I can use it for dinner, then take left overs, add mashed potatoes, some gravy and a veggie and freeze for dinner the next week. I, then also have meat for roast beef sandwiches, and soups. I prepare them all at the same time and make the rest of the week much more relaxed.
Use only the freshest food
Make sure you have good fresh food around. You only want to pack the best for you and your family.
Plan a head
It is amazing how many meals you can put together for your self and your family in as a little as an hour or two a week. If you plan a head, write it on your calendar and follow through, you will have more free time the rest of the week for the things you want to do. As I have gotten older, preparing daily meals is no longer much fun. Meal prepping has really been a blessing and gives me time to write, make crafts, work in the garden or just relax and have Kim time.
Roast Veggies Together
I recommend roasting cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, brussel sprouts or other veggies on a large cookie sheet and add to your different meals to add variety and color.
Here’s What I do With 4.5 – 5 pounds of Hamburger for Food Prep
- Divide the hamburger in to 4 parts – amounts will vary depending on the size of your family. This is just my sample meal prep, you will have to determine what works best for your needs.
- One pound is mixed with minced onions, garlic salt, salt and pepper and 2 tablespoons of BBQ sauce. I then divide into to 4 equal parts and make patties and freeze. This is very useful when you are craving that fast food cheese burger.
- I then cook two pounds either in the instant pot or on the stove top. I ground the meat and brown. Then divide evenly. One part gets turned into spaghetti sauce and the other I add my home made mexican taco/burrito mix.
- With the remaining pound and half I added 1/2 chopped onion, 1 clove of minced garlic, salt pepper, 2 eggs, some BBQ Sauce, 1/2 cup bread crumbs, parsley and form in muffin pans small meatloaves and bake for about 15 minutes. I use either a ketchup, brown sugar combination or brown gravy to top the mini meal loaves. I boil potatoes at the same time and mash to add to my mini meal loaf containers and freeze.
More Food Prep Meal Ideas
- Mason Jar Salads – pour salad dressing in first, add all veggies and fruit. Seal tightly and refrigerate. When ready to eat turn it upside down in a bowl and voila.
- Rice bowls – Add any cooked seasoned meat and veggies.
- Roast Beef – Can be turned into many different meals, from roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy, to broccoli beef, Asian beef, and so much more.
- Chicken – I always recommend cooking lots of extra chicken in the crock-pot, instant pot and the air-fryer. I add chicken to my mason jar salads, spice it up for burrito bowls, wraps, stir-fry and so much more.
- Ground Beef, the possibilities are endless, I like to cook up 4 or five pounds, while taking two pounds and making home made hamburger patties to freeze, they are so much better than the store bought prepare hamburger patties. I make spaghetti sauce, taco meat, meatloaf and meatballs.
- Vegetarian meals are also wonderful when prepared and refrigerator-ed. Cous-cous, quinoa, beans, humus are all wonderful for meal prep.
- Smoothies – It’s easy to load small baggies with assorted pre-cut fruits and veggies. Freeze, mornings get easy by adding yogurt or almond milk to the blender with the frozen fruits. Instant smoothie. I recommend adding your favorite protein powder.
I have found joy in meal prepping. I hope some of these ideas help you. For us planning ahead and preparing our meals for the week gives us much needed free-time, I hope it helps you too!
