If you know me, read my articles or follow me on social media you know that my last twelve years have been filled with challenges and tough times. These challenges have weakened me in some ways but also made me a stronger person. Because I have weathered the storms and have continued to find joy, I am often asked by others, how to get through tough times.
If you don’t know me, the Reader’s Digest version of my tough times are catastrophic illness that left my son profoundly disabled, losing my other son to SUDEP, leaving a career I had built from the ground up, a husband that struggles with depression and chronic debilitating illness, losing my mom that I cared for, and then of course the stress that has come with Covid-19 and the frustration of the impending 2020 election.
With the tough times and challenges of my day to day living I put together a list that helps me and thought some of these ideas might help you get through the tough times!
How to get through the tough times
- First and foremost is having family around you that supports you. Family members that are there when you need them. They visit, chip in and help and always have a listening ear when you need to vent, scream or just chat about anything.
- Find a friend, someone that may not understand what you are going through but still offers encouragement and makes you feel human in an overwhelming world even when life seems to shut you down.
- Exercise, it is important to keep your health in check when caring for others or going through tough stressful times. It helps to get your blood flowing, feel better about yourself and clears your mind.
Get Away – How To Get Through Tough Times
- Plan some away time, time that you have all to yourself or with someone special. Chat on the phone, or go someplace; get a massage, have a coffee or a drink. If your able, take a vacation. Getting away can benefit you emotionally, physically and boost your moral.
- Rescue a dog or cat. Animals are wonderful to cuddle and care for when times are tough. Science has proven that petting a dog or cat calms you down, lowers your heart rate and helps you relax. But choose wisely, if you are stressed or to busy a puppy or kitten is not be a good choice, get an older pet. Pets provide emotional support during tough times.
- If you have faith, dive into it, pray or meditate often.
Turn Off The News
- TURN OFF the News and Social Media! – It can be very depressing. You will find that you will feel better when you don’t dwell on the problems in the world. You can’t fix them so turn them off and focus on the positives you have in your life.
- Positive affirmations can really help your self esteem and overall mental health. Positive affirmations are statements that encourage and lift the person speaking them. Research shows that if you say things like “I am happy” or “I am confident”, even when you don’t believe it, it will help you shift your personal feelings about yourself.
Reconnect With Your Past
- Back To The Future: When life throws you lots of lemons and you’ve made all the lemonade you can make, it’s fun to re-connect with people from an earlier, simpler time. A time when you had joy and happiness. Put yourself out there a little, you never know what might happen. Your past might just change your future.
- Breathe! One of the hardest things to do when you feel life is collapsing around you and the pain and grief is overwhelming. When you feel this way stop, close your mind, sit down and just breathe. Feel each breath and say “I am O.K’ and “I am strong”. Cleansing your lungs and letting yourself feel can be very relaxing and healthy.
- Find a hobby. Find some sort of activity or creative outlet that you can either do or create when you feel overwhelmed. Art therapy is a wonderful way to express yourself during tough times.
Start A Journal
- Start a journal, admittedly this is something I haven’t done, although it’s been suggested several times. But I do have lots of friends and people i know that absolutely swear by it! Keep it private and truly express yourself.
- Find like minded people, those going through some of the same stresses of day to day living that you are experiencing. Support groups can really make a difference. Knowing you are not alone benefits the healing process and get through tough times. Find a group or person that is positive, not someone struggling and not looking for Joy or change.
- Seek professional help. If it all gets to be to overwhelming and you can’t find your way out of the hard times and feelings and thoughts turn negative contact a professional that may be able to help you.
Don’t Get Stuck in Hard Times
It is very easy to fall into the trap of self pity, loneliness, and sadness. Don’t get stuck there – make every effort to fight your way out. Don’t get trapped in tough times. If you follow the above ideas eventually you’ll be able to get more comfortable and find Joy. Everyone has different coping skills, find the ones that work best for you.
How to get through tough times is a unique experience for everyone. Don’t do it alone. I enjoy my alone time but know that I need other people too!
Don’t let anyone tell you how to process your grief, anger, loss or tough times in your life. But always, move in a positive direction. I hope some of these ideas help you find joy in your life during the good and tough times.
