Grandma’s Best Rolls Ever!

Grandpa, Grandma, Kari & I in the 80's

Growing up in Southern California my sister and I spent a lot of time at grandma and grandpas house. Kari & I were lucky because our grandma made everything from scratch. Grandma’s Best Rolls Ever were definitely one of our favorites.

During the 60’s our mom was a working single mother. Grandma cooked for us before and after school. Yes we were spoiled and surrounded by a ton of love. We were lucky to have such a close family and grandparents to help take care of us.

When we got home from school, grandma’s house was always filled with the amazing smells of fresh baked cookies, meals and best of all Grandma’s Best Rolls Ever. I miss them and grandma’s cooking.

Grandma always saved a little extra dough for us to play with, no kids we didn’t have iPad’s, smart phones and only 3 TV channels, dough was fun. we would make all sorts of critters and things with the fun dough. She would often add food coloring to the dough which made it even more fun.

Bread Day Was The Best Day

On bread day, Grandma would make us flap jacks with the fresh dough. Flap Jacks are pieces of smashed bread dough fried in a ton of butter then topped with her delicious homemade jam! It was amazing.

With my love for Grandma’s best rolls ever I needed to share the recipe with all of you. I make lots of soups, stews and other dishes and these rolls complete each meal.

Grandma didn’t use rapid rise yeast, but I do and it sure makes the process faster without losing any taste. I also use olive oil instead of vegetable oil and spray on olive oil instead of butter to grease my pans.

  8. Place dough back in the bowl and cover with clean dishtowel.

  9. Let Rise for approximately 60 to 75 minutes

  10. Remove dough, divide dough into 3 equal parts

  11. Spray non-stick olive oil spray into 3 pie tins or cake pans

  12. Divide each of the 3 balls into 6-8 equal parts and roll into round balls. Place the balls into pie plates.

  13. Cover and let rise for another 60 to 90 minutes. I usually cover with a clean dish towel.

  14. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees

  15. Mix egg in a small bowl. Use basting brush and lightly coat all of the rolls with the egg.

  16. Place the pans in preheated oven and set the timer for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes reduce the heat to 350 degrees and continue to cook the rolls for an additional 16 minutes or until they are golden brown on top and bottom.

  17. Remove the rolls from the oven and using the cleaned basting brush coat with melted butter.

  18. For best results serve hot out of the oven.
