After dealing with the mental health community this last year, losing our son because of their complete lack of understanding, over medication and misdiagnosing I have come up with ten questions to ask your therapist/psychiatrist before continuing care with them.

Ten Questions to Ask Your Therapist/Psychiatrist
- Why have you made this diagnosis? They may have diagnosed you with depression, bipolar disorder, social anxiety disorder, conversion disorder, or any other mental illness disorder in one visit. Get a clear diagnosis and ask questions!
- What medication are you prescribing and why? What will each prescription do to me? Are there short and long term side effects? Some medication stop you from creating your own serotonin so you become drug dependent forever.
- Is this a lifetime diagnosis? Sometimes depression and other mental health problems can be situational. Make sure you know and that you can stop medication with the situation improves.
- Are there other things I can do besides take medication? Exercise, vitamins, good nutrition all can benefit the brain and help or eliminate the need for medication.
- Can I see my file and read your notes each visit? We found our sons psychiatrists notes were terrible and misinterpreted everything my son and I said to her.
- Can my family be involved with my sessions and my care? It is crucial you have a support system and especially if you aren’t thinking clearly or experiencing delusions, you need to have your family involved to help you.
- What if the medications don’t work? Is there a back up plan? How do I know they are working or making me worse? How will I know if I am getting better? Have the doctor lay out a measurable plan to help you see the signs of improvement or worsening of your diagnosed disorder.
- How much experience do you have treating my disorder? This means a lot because they may not have any!!
- Will you be there for me 24/7 if something happens and I need you? What is the plan if your doctor can’t be reached? Is there an emergency number and someone on call?
- Could my problems be something else like an infection, virus or other physical problem causing my feelings and/or behaviors? Can I have a complete physical before I start treatment to eliminate other causes of my depression etc?
Mental Health is Serious Business – It’s your brain and your body
I hope this helps you. You do not have to stay with someone you believe is not treating you appropriately. Question your diagnoses and don’t leave till you feel good about a treatment plan. If you can’t or don’t get the answers you want find another doctor.
