Rolling With Zac: Sarasota Florida

So we finally did it! We took the flying travel plunge with Zac. Rolling with Zac: Sarasota Florida turned out to be an amazing adventure.

Nervous as we were for our first airplane vacation with Zac we were cheered on family to take this adventure. They also volunteered to stay at our rescue and watch over 30 rescue critters for us.

I spent a month on the phone trying to figure out the perfect beach vacation spot for our get away.

Once we set our hearts on Sarasota Florida and Siesta Key I needed to find the perfect hotel. After tons of research I booked through Expedia.com and got a screaming hot deal at the Ritz-Carlton.

I Booked Our Trip – Rolling With Zac: Sarasota Florida

I booked first class tickets as the smaller coach seats would be to hard to adjust Zac and give him the room he needed to be comfortable. We booked the hotel and flight as a package through Expedia.com. For those that don’t know Zac is a quadriplegic with severe brain damage. My husband and I provide him with 24/7 care and fill all of his daily needs. His story is at the bottom of this article.

So we were set, 8 days and 7 nights at the beautiful luxurious Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota Florida. The anticipation of the trip kept our minds busy, taking someone like Zac anywhere takes a lot of planning.

Fred in reservations at the Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota was more than nice to us and we spoke several times. Fred listened to our needs and booked us the only room with a roll in shower and two queen sized beds. He also connected me with Chris the concierge to help fill the rest of our travel and special needs.

Chris proved to be such an amazing asset. I called him frequently with questions and requests all of which he met with grace and humor.

Chris arranged for us to have a Doctors Transport pick us up at the airport. That is how we met Tom, another new friend and our trusty driver. We laughed all the way to the hotel. He told us history about the area and made suggestions of things we should do while visiting.

Hospitality Done Right!

When we arrived at the hotel, from the doormen to check in we were given the royal treatment. The gorgeous marble floors and glistening chandeliers lining the hallways reminded me of my childhood. I felt like a princess on one of the lavish vacations my aunt use to take me on years ago.

All of staff shook Zac’s hand and acted like they were old friends. Zac was so happy and soaked up all of the attention.

I also finally got to give Chris a big hug and a thank him for organizing key parts of our trip.

When we got to our room we were delighted that the roll in shower was huge. There was plenty of space for all of us and our stuff.

I purchased a roll-in shower chair to be delivered to the hotel prior to our arrival. I highly recommend doing this, the chair was $100 and relieved us from dragging one from home on the airplane. We donated the chair to the hotel for future guests to use after we left.

First Night Adventures

Exhausted from our trip the boys laid down and took a little nap. I set on the balcony soaking in the ocean filled air embracing the sites surrounding me. I could fill my breath softening and the stress start to leave my body.

Once everyone was awake and we changed our clothes we were rolling. Hungry, we headed straight to the water front. We found a wonderful casual restaurant called Marina Jacks over looking the harbor. It was a very busy place with a talented live band playing lively beach music. We celebrated our first night cold daiquiris and scrumptious seafood.

Zac loved the music so much he actually had tears in his eyes listening to the band play. When he gets excited he just chatters non stop. Way too much fun.

After dinner we took a nice walk around the harbor. The air was thick but the salty sea smells filled our souls. Small lizards were everywhere and we could feel our beloved son that we recently lost was with us there in spirit.

Finding Some Peace

As we took in the scents of the ocean, sounds of music and beach life we felt some peace. Something we haven’t felt in months.

We made our way back to the hotel where we crashed for night. The next morning was a Sunday. I heard of a drum circle at Siesta Key that only played on Sunday night. We decided to try out the cities SCAT bus system to go hear the drummer song at sunset.

Transportation In Sarasota Was So Easy with the SCAT Bus System

Amazingly, the buses were extremely accommodating to us and our special needs. The drivers were courteous and informative as they told us stories about the area, home prices, and useful tidbits. After 3 easy transfers we made our destination.

Important note: A few of the bus stops are on grass, so if you are in a push wheelchair loading maybe difficult. If you can’t use the regular bus stop you can call a number and they will send a special bus. Also, People in wheelchairs ride for free in the entire Sarasota area, caregivers are just 65 cents.

Rolling With Zac in Siesta Key

Finally, there we were in Siesta Key. We left the hotel without eating breakfast. It was lunch time so we found ourselves with a choice, the famous Gilligan’s Island or the Daiquiri Deck. We chose the Daiquiri Deck because we could see the food and it looks delicious. They had a great wheelchair elevator for Zac to ride in up to the deck over looking the small quaint beach town.

We dined on shrimp tacos, crab cakes, pizza and freezing cold daiquiris. We were not disappointed. Our server was so nice and went above and beyond to answer our questions and fill our dining needs.

Siesta key has an accessible trolley that runs around the island but after our late lunch we decided to walk and roll. The main beach with the drummers was a little farther than we thought, but Zac was a trooper and made the two miles with a smile on his face, maybe it was a little bit the daiquiris too.

I read that they had beach wheelchairs for Zac and that is one reason we went there. Unfortunately for us, the long lunch and the walk got us to the beach at 9 minutes after 4 pm and they do not loan out the handicapped water chairs after 4 pm. Very bummed, we walked to the end of the accessible walkway towards the ocean, took a few pictures, and heard a few of the drummers. Zac was fading fast so we headed to the bus stop and back to our hotel.

The beach was beautiful and the white powdery sand was like no other sand I had ever seen, we just should have gotten there earlier. But heck this was an adventure, plans change and new adventures happen.

Safe to say we wore the man out!

Rolling With Zac: Sarasota Florida and More Adventures

The next day we woke refreshed and made our way to the hotel shuttle to spend the day at the Ritz Carlton Beach Club. Chris our faithful concierge had reserved us the water chair and we were ready to go. Upon arrival the view was simply breathtaking. We parked Zac’s chair at the Tiki Bar and loaded him into the beach wheelchair, sadly, only to find that it was broke. But Chet’s quick thinking and some big zip ties got the chair up and running.

We had three reserved lounge chairs, umbrellas, buckets of bottled water and a young and gracious server named David. We were set, the day was beautiful, the food and drinks divine and Zac got to get into the ocean for the first time in over ten years. It took the kindness of strangers on the beach to help us make this happen. Our new beach friends took pictures for us and helped move the beach wheel chair after we got Zac in the water and for this we are grateful. Rolling with Zac: Sarasota Florida just got a whole lot funner!

On our third day at the beach they did find us another beach wheelchair that was much newer and wasn’t as dangerous as the first one. Thank goodness. Back in the water we went!

Sunburned but Worth it!

We spent several days on the beach getting a little too much sun but what the heck we were on vacation. A little sunburn didn’t hold us back, we were on the beach and in the ocean and that is all that mattered. Zac had the time of his life. He laughed, and even cried as some of our adventures brought back memories and feelings he hadn’t felt in some time. We wore the boy out!

I even got to see my brother one night for dinner and then again at breakfast. He lives about five hours away from Sarasota and drove down to see me.

We spent a few days in St. Armand a small beach town, where we shopped, listened to fantastic music at the St. Armand Daiquiri Deck location and ate more delectable seafood. St. Armand is only minutes from the hotel and full of charm, high fashion and fun shops.

Our Last Day of Rolling With Zac: Sarasota Florida

On our last day, sunburned we decided to go to the Mote Aquarium to see some manatees. Again, we misjudged the distance from St. Armand and walked and rolled our way there. It was about a mile and a half in the very hot sun, but Zac enjoyed every minute as Chet is always joking with him and pointing out fun things to see like the flamingo mailbox, lizards, flowers, and even grabbed a coconut that had recently fallen.

My Favorite Mailbox Ever!!!

Mote Aquarium

Everyone was very nice and accommodating at the aquarium except for the three very grumpy men working in the 50’s style cafe. Not sure they even knew how to smile, which was sad because it was a very cute little place and they even served fresh cut Idaho potatoes. We are from Idaho.

We took the bus back to St. Armand, we had walked and rolled enough for the day. After a quick stop to grab some more taffy for grandma waiting for us back at home, we hopped on the shuttle back to the hotel We arrived back at the hotel in time for a torrential down pour of rain. It smelled so good and fresh. The rain cooled the air for our last night in Sarasota.

The Ritz-Carlton Listens

This was a magical trip with very few accessibility issues. We loved the hotel and give it huge thumbs up for convenience, hospitality off the charts, great elevators with plenty of room to turn Zac’s chair around, fantastic pool access at the beach club and the main hotel and delicious gourmet food.

There are several places around the Ritz-Carlton to dine. But I do recommend having a few meals and drinks on the patio. The sunsets are breathtaking. Every night it was looking at a completely different canvas with mother nature holding the paint brush.

I have never been known to be shy, so when accessibility issues arouse both Chet and I would talk to the staff. One morning Zac had quite the accident in the bathroom. Poor Chet scrubbed grout, walls and tile for a half hour. Chet then went downstairs and spoke to Dillion the Assistant General Manager and explained the problems we were having. Dillion promptly set up a meeting for us with the main hotel engineer!

This was huge, Carl, the hotels chief engineer was so nice and truly listened to our suggestions. When Carl came to our room I had a list of 12 items that would make the room, the beach club and the hotel more spectacular and a premier destination for any wheelchair guest and their caregiver.

My List To Improve Accessibility at The Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota Florida

  • Bathroom was huge but tiled completely in large marble tiles. It was very slippery and I fell twice while showering Zac. I suggested either one, re-tile which is expensive or add inexpensive tread strips to the shower area.
  • The shower hose with hand held sprayer was very short and stiff which made it dangerous for anyone because it would catch on the temperature control valve and push it to super hot water. I Recommended longer, softer flexible hand held hose where a person can actually reach to wash their bottom.
  • The hotel needs more accessible rooms with two beds. Oddly most accessible rooms come with only a king sized bed.
  • Toilet could be placed in a better location nearer the shower and drain.
  • Refrigerator in the room is in a cabinet – the cabinet opens one way and the fridge door the other, very hard to access for someone in a wheelchair. We suggested moving the hinges to the other side so they open the same way.
  • Lights and thermostat are in odd areas making it difficult for anyone to reach let alone someone in a wheelchair. He took pictures and hopefully figuring out a plan so that you can easily adjust lights and thermostat.
  • We were told we would have a deck which we did, problem is it was not accessible for an electric wheelchair so Zac never got to sit on the deck while we were there. We suggested a small removable ramp for porch access when the guest is in an electric wheelchair.
  • Rolling toilet shower chairs like what we left there are desperately needed as many people with disabilities cannot sit on a regular toilet.

Dining Areas

  • In the restaurant and patio area – Zac’s wheelchair did not fit under any of the tables on the patio or inside of the restaurant. There were two tables down four stairs that he could have sat at comfortably but no access to them. We recommended a few new tables that are taller for easier accessibility and improved quality to enjoy a meal or cocktail.

Beach Club

  • At the Beach Club – We recommended they get some new beach wheelchairs, including one that goes into the ocean and floats. They need to repair the two they have as back up.
  • Showers at the Beach Club – Showers were not accessible for the beach wheelchair so a shower for Zac was impossible. We recommended getting a roll in shower chair like the one we left at the hotel. Also adjust the heat in the showers as the water was scolding hot and could easily burn a child or anyone else.

Hotel Shuttle Bus

  • Hotel Bus – Drivers were awesome but didn’t have a good education on the workings of the ramp. We had to show one of the drivers several things and actually missed one bus because he couldn’t operate the ramp. Drivers did not strap in wheelchair and had we not been there on a couple of the turns Zac’s wheelchair would have tipped over. We recommended monthly refresher training for drivers and safety precautions.

Wrap Up and the End of a Wonderful Week Rolling With Zac: Sarasota Florida

This was a dream vacation for us. Yes there were a few things that would have made the trip a little easier, however, the Ritz-Carlton staff, the people of Sarasota, Siesta Key, St. Armand, Tom from Doctor’s Transport and the SCAT bus drivers made this trip fantastic. I highly recommend this hotel to anybody traveling but especially for those that use a wheelchair. We have zero complaints and appreciate the fact that the hotel staff and Carl the Chief Engineer were more than willing to listen to our ideas. I am confident that because of their superior customer service that they are working on some of them right now for the next rolling hotel guests.

When we left to the airport our new friend Tom with Doctors Transport picked us up. He’s like an old friend, you just want to hug him. He brought me a wonderful gift box of Siesta Key sand, coral and a shell. It warmed my heart. The gift now sits on my shelf close to our other memories. We plan to get together on our next trip.

Delta Airlines

I also want to commend Delta Airlines and their incredible employees. Our fear of flying due to damaging the wheelchair sadly became a reality. However, each crew member we met along the way was eager to help us and we have already been called by their wheelchair repair company to repair the areas of Zac’s chair that got damaged. Most of the damage occurred on the way home, I think it was more rushed as many people were fleeing Florida from the impending Hurricane Dorian that was fast approaching. But Delta Airlines personnel went above and beyond to make us comfortable even when we got a little edgy about the wheelchair.

Zac’s Broken Chair
Rolling With Zac: Sarasota Florida

Two suggestion for Delta would be to offer a discounted first class price to people that are confined to a wheelchair. The second suggestion is to have a lift to load wheelchairs at every airport instead of just the main hubs.

Thank You to the phenomenal crew at the Ritz-Carlton and the people of Sarasota for giving our family a trip to remember!

      1. Very honest review! It should be helpful for many families traveling with disabled family members. My daughter is autistic and some of the events would be very fun and accommodating to her!

  2. You, Chet and Zac definitely deserved to have a wonderful vacation… you have all been through so much pain, sadness and struggle. I am so happy that you had a great time and hope that you are able to get back to the ocean / beach soon! You are the best mom and caregiver and give so much to help animals in need when you are under such stress yourself – you are truly an amazing woman … we all love you so much!

  3. What an awesome getaway. I’ve always been impressed with services at Ritz-Carlton Hotels and I’m glad to hear they were responsive and open to suggestions. There are more and more travelers in wheelchairs and we all need reminders of the things that can be improved. Looks like you all had a wonderful time!

    1. Thanks Annick, They were more than gracious and interested. It is pretty darn amazing how just a few small tweaks can make or break a vacation for a person in a wheelchair and their family.

  4. What a truly inspiring post! The fear of traveling with a loved one with a disability is real! It seems that even though there was some issues you all had a wonderful time! Congratulations to the Ritz Carlton for their superior service..I will be using them in the future because of your recommendation! Thank you so much for sharing your story!

    1. Thank you Holly, they were truly wonderful at the hotel and approved of the article before I published. They need some improvement and totally loved finding out where! Can’t wait to travel again.

  10. Great idea for traveling with someone with limited mobility – I had NO idea there where wheelchairs for the beach! So glad you got to all enjoy yourselves – pictures are amazing!

  11. What an amazing adventure you all had. The beach wheelchairs I saw for the first time a few years ago, so glad you found a good one and had a lovely beach day. The Ritz Carlton sounds amazing and I am so glad they were so accomodating (minus the need for taller tables!)

  12. I love everything about this post, but my favorite thing is that after you bought a chair for use on your trip, you donated it so it could be a help to others in the future. Humanity at its finest.

    1. Thank you Eva. Those that don’t have to roll into a shower just don’t get the limitation of a bench or whatever a hotel usually has, I hope the chair helps many enjoy their bathing experience now.

  13. I have never been to Florida but Sarasota looks like the place to be. I love the wheelchair that went right in the ocean. That is awesome.

  14. I have been to Sarasota many times – my aunt lived on Longboat key many years ago and also had a shop in St. Armand Circle! I am so glad that the area is ranked high for accessible services. It has come a long way.

    1. Yes I am sure it has, it was really fun to have virtually no limits for him there. He could roll everywhere and was greeted with happy faces and great service. Nice people and great location for a wheelchair.

  15. What an amazing trip you planned for your family! You bring up so many points that I would never have thought of with having a wheelchair. We have often found difficulties with having a double stroller, but it is completely different than your situation!

  16. First of all – loved the title of this post! I love that you were able to get Zac out of the house and create some forever memories with him. I smiled through every adventure Zac took and was inspired by the way you handled obstacles that came your way. Great ideas for improvements, along with the list of compliments you doled out. Very balanced post.

  17. Hi,
Someone shared the post about your son with me! My twelve year old has Bartonella as well. We are heading to Sarasota in a few weeks to try a different treatment route for him (so this post caught my eye as well). He has improved so much on antibiotics but we want to head toward more natural ways of keeping him healthy. I am so, so sorry for your loss and it makes all of us dealing with these illnesses so angry that Drs are not better trained in these pathogens. Lack of proper testing is also a huge part of this problem!
I’m sure you probably came upon this in all of your research but have you thought about that your son diagnosed with MS may also have vector-borne illness? Lyme & Co is often diagnosed as that! If you think there is a chance that could be the case find the best Lyme Literate Dr. near you. People have gotten out of wheelchairs with treatment. Your outlook on life and what you are giving to others on this blog is amazing. I am so sorry life has dealt you so many hard things but you sure are making the best of it!! Blessings!

    1. Thank you so much Wendy, and Yes I have thought about it. I do work with an infectious disease doctor in Utah. My son was initially tested for lyme when he first got sick but learning how Bart and Lyme both hide in the system he will be retested. I have talked to the infectious disease doctor at the U of U and he knows very little about Bart. He says they just don’t get it around here. We are finding others that do have it around here. I make the trip back to see all of his specialist next spring and will have him tested for sure. I do believe that just about every disease, autoimmune to Alzheimer’s is caused by a bacteria or virus. Most doctors don’t care and only treat symptoms so true diagnosis is lost. Your son is lucky to have you and that you are looking for new treatments. I have a friend that has suffered from Bart for over 35 years. Her son was born with it. Sadly it is a chronic disease and with the medical world refusing to look at it more closely many more go undiagnosed.

Good luck in Sarasota and please if you don’t mind keep me posted.

  18. So happy you guys got to have a wonderful vacation! Going to the beach is always so healing for me. Blessings to you and your amazing family!

  19. What great memories you had! Thank you for sharing so others can find ways to really enjoy vacations that may seem difficult to do 🙂

  20. How awesome you were able to go on this trip after all of the stuff you guys have been through! Looks like you had such an amazing time. I was diagnosed with relapse/remitting MS back in 2013. Crazy how your whole life can change in a day. You guys are doing great 🙂

  21. It’s so important when hotels are accommodating for the disabled. I would suggest checking local senior citizen citizens for a medical equipment rental program. Our local senior and disabled advocacy group have a rental program and really, it’s just a donation.

    1. Thank you. The only problem with most senior centers, as I use to run one is they don’t have the ability to wash, sterilize or ensure that equipment is in good shape. But thank you for the suggestion.
