Don’t Wait To Start Your Bucket (Living) List

My life is the perfect example of why you should never wait to start your bucket list. So many people wait until they retire or get sick. Your bucket list should be ever evolving and should be started when you are young. You can add to your bucket list as things are learned or new adventures presented.

As many of my followers know, the last ten years of my life has been filled with tragedy, illnesses, disappointments and loss of self and independence. I care for four disabled people and doing things on my bucket list gets harder and harder each day.

My life has been filled with adventure!

I have been lucky because before life fell apart for me, I traveled the world, received accolades on my business achievements, was voted woman of the year, danced till dawn, celebrated New Years in different countries, learned much and did things most people only dream about.

Don’t get me wrong, I still have a huge bucket list. So many things to do! I am going to accomplish as many things as humanely possible on my list. With my life complications it is more difficult now because my needs come after everyone else. But I am determined to cross off more adventures, cook new foods, write often and complete some big goals on my bucket list.

I am writing this because you need to know that if you spend all of your time working and focusing on things that don’t give you joy or fill your soul then one day something bad may happen and take your choices away. Your life can change in an instant. Your employer will replace you immediately. Friends will disappear because they don’t understand and in many cases even family stays away.

When long term illness or loss happens your life changes

I know you’re saying that will never happen to me. That happens to other people. My friends and family will always be by my side. I thought the same thing. In the beginning they were, but over time, we stopped talking. Their lives kept going and I could no longer participate. Fortunately for me, my small family has been there through everything, the good, bad and the ugly.

When tragedy or illness strikes your world as you know it forever changes. Your new normal will become all to consuming. You will find the little things you took joy in are no longer there, or harder to achieve. Lunch out with the girls, dancing on Friday night, going to the gym, traveling, a round of golf or just sitting and reading by yourself will happen less frequently and sometimes not at all.

Forget the Bucket List – Start a Living List

I also recommend you change the name of your bucket list to your living list. What do you want to do now, in one year, five years or 25 years. Where do you see yourself. Do you set goals to get there. I am talking about the things that fill your heart and soul. Things that scare you but make you totally excited. Set your standards high but be honest about living list. Don’t add climbing Kilimanjaro if you don’t even like to hike. But do add things that you wouldn’t normally do but want to conquer.

Make your living list amazing. Make your list about experiences and moments. Things that take your breath away like when the ocean air and mist come crashing in after a big wave. The sun rising over the snow covered mountain peaks of Switzerland, or cherry blossoms blooming in Okinawa. Your living list should make everything in your heart warm and beat faster. Things like zip-lining through the amazon when your heart flutters with fear. And the leaves brush against your skin and you can laugh at the monkeys running the tree line with you.

A bucket list implies your close to the end, you never know when that might be so live. Make that living list, add to it when you see a commercial or something that makes you say Wow, I need to do that. Don’t forget the little things on that list, hiking the hill behind your house that you’ve looked at for years. Learn to surf in the ocean down the street, catch your first fish, ballroom dance, learn to cook, craft, travel, scuba dive, jump out of a plane or whatever, add it to your list. Big or small it is about things you want to try no matter what others thinks.

Let Life Take Your Breath Away

If you don’t live, breathe deeply, take a chance, let joy, love and life fill your soul now you may never get the chance to do it later.

Have Two, Three, Four or Even Five Lists

Having a few different lists can help you check more off of your living list.

My Lists are simple – Here are some ideas for yours

  • Creative Living list – Could be learn to paint, blow glass, throw a pot, make soap, candles, learn to do stained glass, refinish your furniture, or anything else that spark creativity.
  • Travel Living List – Visit Hawaii, Australia, Fuji, Take a cruise, take a train across the country, visit the space needle or millions of other places to travel.
  • Adventure Living List – Adventure can of course always cross over to travel, but adventure zip-lining the Grand Canyon, Skiing in Dubia, Jumping of the Perrine Bridge in Idaho, or riding all the roller coasters at Magic Mountain.
  • Family Living List – Teach your child to ride a bike, de-clutter the house, fung shui your life, go vegetarian, learn a foreign language as a family, take your family camping, help your child get through school, paint the house, build a deck, go to Disneyland or anything related to home and family.
  • Professional Living List – This one can be tricky and can become so consuming you forget about your other lists. Don’t let it. I did for many years and lost sight of what was important. This list could include things like get promoted, start a business, make $10,000 a month, start a blog, or retire by 40. Just don’t live for this list.
  • Spiritual Living List – Become more spiritual, meditate, yoga, pray, join a new church, or anything that raises your spiritual awareness.

You Can say what I do, “I have no regrets!” Now get started on your living list today!
